The Center sees dissemination of the best practices and research results to the STEM community, particularly the LSAMP institutions, as an enduring contribution and a major component of its broad impact. As the LSAMP community has grown during the last decades, most programs have developed support for international research for undergraduate students as part of NSF’s ambition to expand research experiences for students worldwide. These investments and practices have resulted in great contributions to the diversity of STEM research training. For example, All Nations AMP (ANAMP) program has provided a short-term international field experience in Costa Rica for undergraduate indigenous students and faculty mentors that combine Western scientific training with Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge. These experiences have been designed to speak to the promise and importance of centering Indigenous people’s cultures and knowledge around Western Scientific thought within STEM research fields.
Through its focused dissemination and professional development activities; LSAMP-NICE expands such practices to broaden exposure of international research opportunities to the LSAMP institutions serving diverse underrepresented minority communities (HBCUs, HSIs, TCUs & other MSIs) of different sizes and geographic location.
The Center is dedicated to a community of international practice connecting LSAMP Alliances with all entities (iREU, IRES, PIRE, SCTs, etc.) which have the resources to support international research participation and host institutions within numerous countries. Currently, the center has collaborators in France, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Costa Rica, and Panama. Some countries have their own capacity and financial resources to recruit US students in research. For example, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), out of Saudi Arabia, recruits undergraduate students annually from diverse institutions in the United States and provide them full support to conduct research and engage in dissemination of research through conference presentation and publication.
